2020/21 Season

Welcome to the 2020-2021 Season

Fall 2020 update:

Our Flames Prep Hockey Team began working on skills and training in late August. With the restrictions experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were fortunate to have well-developed protocols and safety measures in place.

As October arrived, our 2020-2021 team members, along with their coaching staff, welcomed the phasing in of exhibition games at a provincial level within Manitoba, within a small cohort of approved teams.

We continue to provide our program of excellence within an ever changing and evolving environment in response to the COVID-19 situation. Current processes are consistently reviewed and updated as needed. We are working diligently to ensure that the environment for our team remains safe so that they may continue to train and/or compete as a team and remain focussed on their studies at St. Mary’s Academy.

Dec 1, 2020 update:

In response to provincial Public Health orders issued in late October, practices and games continue to be suspended. Our student athletes remain focussed on their regular off-ice training and team community sessions (via Zoom). Naturally, they are also maintaining their strong academic commitments as they adapt to changing provincial response levels in the education sector.

We will update our site with changes as they occur. We are all doing our part to ensure that our players, their families, our staff and all our community members remain healthy.

Let’s all do our part to make a difference.

Feb 20, 2021 update:

All Manitobans have worked hard to make a difference and curb the spread of COVID-19.

With the most recent updates to Code Red restrictions in the province of Manitoba, our Flames Prep team is excited to be able to return to practice. Following strict guidelines as developed by Hockey Manitoba in consultation with Manitoba Health officials, our team is now able to hold their practice sessions at an outdoor rink facility. We consider ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to skate outdoors, under the canopy, at Camp Manitou.

The team has skated together a few times as of the date of this update. Smiles were the norm, passion for sport was evident, and it is obvious that our team members love having this chance to be together as they enter this first phase of our province’s return to play.

March 5, 2021 update:

Our Flames Prep team is excited to hear that we are now able to begin indoor practice at our home ice location: Bell MTS IcePlex. Strict COVID guidelines are in place for the IcePlex. We are looking forward to getting on the ice inside in our “home barn”.

April 13, 2021 update:

We continue to train and prepare for the hopeful return to game play.  Once updates are announced we will make a decision of how to proceed for the remainder of our year.

We appreciate the dedication that the team members have given and the eagerness which they have returned to the ice!  They have been practicing with intensity and positive attitudes.  We wish to maintain this and hope and recognize that by adjusting to 4.5 hours per week on ice, we will be on track to continue to build skills and come together on ice. This is a unique year of learning and growth for our student athletes. We continue to honour and validate their commitment to their studies as they “hold high the torch”.
Our next update will be by May 2nd, with our path guided by the advice from our province health offices.
We are all in this together.
Let’s continue to stay safe and act with care and consideration for all.
April 29, 2021 update:
As we move into Spring, it appears that the hope that we have held for a modified/shortened hockey season is fading.  As a community we are cognizant of the implications of COVID-19, the increasing case numbers and the newest changes in provincial restrictions and guidelines.
As a team, the coaching staff wishes to keep building and developing our players.  We have come to the decision to reduce practices to two times per week beginning May 3 (similar to regular spring training for the team).  This will allow the team to maintain structured practices while also allowing players to focus on their academics as they approach the end of their school year, and hopefully enjoy some spring activities.
We continue to act with care and consideration for the safety of all.
May we all find balance amidst the changing landscape of responding to the current pandemic situation.
Remain safe everyone.
May 15, 2021 update:
On May12th, Manitoba Public Health announced increased restrictions in the province of Manitoba due to the third wave of the Pandemic. As the restrictions now prohibit any indoor sport practices, we are announcing that the 2020-2021 season has officially been cancelled.  There will be no additional team training activities in June.
Once we are able, we will be holding a team banquet for the 2020-2021 team. This season was not what any of the players, coaches, and parents would have wanted. We thank everyone for their perseverance as we navigated as best we could through this season.
If there are changes to the current public health restrictions and we are able to resume skating in June, then we will provide that opportunity as a “jump-start” to next season. At the same time, the graduating players will be welcomed to join as always.  If June on-ice activity is not permitted, then we plan to resume in mid-August.  There will be further communications once details are known.
Our team members are now focussing on completing their school year strongly and preparing for their final assessments. We have confidence in their academic commitments, and know that they will continue their diligent focus on this final stage of the school year.
Be safe, and continue to remain aware of the need to act with care for all.
Remember to balance the spirit, mind and body during these unexpected times.
Thank you to our entire team community for their ongoing support of and
belief in our student athletes.
